Gianfranco Selgas is a scholar working on Latin American studies

I am a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at University College London (UCL). My research and teaching explore the cultural, media, and political ecology of nature extraction and energy consumption across Latin America and the Caribbean. It combines critical theory, environmental history, and political ecology. My research has been awarded the “Best Article on Venezuela Award (Humanities)” by the Venezuelan Studies Section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in 2021, the Post-Doctoral Research Award by the Society for Latin American Studies (SLAS) in 2023, and runner-up in the 3rd edition of the Professor Andrzej Dembicz Award for the Best Doctoral Thesis on Latin America and the Caribbean granted by the European Council for Social Research in Latin America (CEISAL) in 2025. I am a member of the Petrocultures Research Group and Guest Researcher (2024-2025) at KTH’s Department of Sustainable Development, Environmental Sciences and Engineering (SEED), Sweden.
